History: In 1939, the Gunther-Schmitt company was founded in Düsseldorf, Germany, with the sole purpose of creating attack aircraft and heavy fighters for the Luftwaffe. The first eleven designs were concepts, and never made it past simple sketches. But the GS-12 was selected by the Luftwaffe high command because (for its time) it was fast, maneuverable, and could carry a variety of different load outs. The first variant to go into mass production was the Ausf.A, which saw over 3,000 units built before the Ausf.B and Ausf.C eventually replaced it. It was also revolutionary because (in later versions) it housed an internal radar system (instead of it being on the nose like on the BF-110). The series as a whole (from the Ausf.A to the Ausf.H) was manufactured until two days after the Germans lost Wold War II (the factory workers and remaining soldiers on site were not informed that the war ended until an American patrol came through the village the factory was located in).
