The Mil Mi-8 (NATO code name "Hip") is a large twin-engine helicopter. The first single-engine model (AI-24W), the W-8, flew on 9 July 1961. The second twin-engine AI-24W first flew on 17 September 1962. After repairs . With some modifications, it entered service in the Soviet Union. Air Force in 1967 under the name Mi-8.
