Lufthansa's A340-300 Airbus A340-300 was developed for the 300-seat long-range market. It first flew on 25 October 1991 and was delivered to Lufthansa and Air France in March 1993. It is the original model of the Airbus A340, a high-capacity type, and the cabin is extended compared with the Airbus A340-200. The standard two-class cabin layout carries 295 passengers. The A340-300 increases flexibility and access to new markets, and direct point-to-point flight services increase flight efficiency. The Boeing airliner of the A340-300 is the Boeing 777-200ER.
The A340-300 can travel more than 6,700 nautical miles (12,400 km) in a two-class cabin layout with a total of 295 passengers. Using four CFM56-5C engines, there is unconfirmed information that compared with other A340 models and Boeing aircraft of the same type, the climbing speed of the -300 model is unsatisfactory due to engine thrust problems.
The A340-313X is the higher gross weight model of the A340, first delivered to Singapore Airlines in April 1996.
The Airbus A340-300A340-313E has a maximum takeoff weight of 271 metric tons to 275 metric tons and a capacity of 295 passengers, with a range of 7,100 nautical miles to 7,300 nautical miles (13,100 km to 13,500 km), and is powered by four CFM56-5C4s engines with a thrust of 151 kilotons each. The A340-313E was first delivered to SWISS in 2003.
The A340-300 also has a nickname called 5 APUs. The reason for this nickname is because the engine thrust of the A340-300 is too small, equivalent to hanging 4 APU (auxiliary power unit) on the body, and because the aircraft itself has an APU, it is nicknamed 5APU.
