OH-1 does not have any fixed weapons, and only installs the Japanese dual-mounted 91 air-to-air missile on the outer pylon of the short wing to defend itself. The Ministry of Defense of Japan defines OH-1 as "a purely observation helicopter, armed only for self-defence, not including attack function", so OH-1 has also become the first military helicopter armed only with air-to-air missiles in the world.
