The Sonic Cruiser was born out of one of many outline research and development projects that Boeing began in the 1990s, with the goal of finding a potential design for a new near- or supersonic passenger aircraft. The Sonic Cruiser was publicly unveiled on March 29, 2001, at Soon after rival Airbus launched the A380. Boeing recently withdrew its proposed 747X derivative from competition with the A380 due to insufficient interest from airlines and proposed the Sonic Cruiser as a completely different approach. The Sonic Cruiser is designed to provide fast point-to-point connections for 200 to 250 passengers, rather than the massive capacity required by the A380 in a hub-and-spoke operating model. Critics say Boeing timed its announcement to try to divert attention from the A380 launch.
