In 1970 the Royal Australian Air Force ordered 24 F4C* phantoms in order to fill the role of ground attack that the delayed F-111C would have filled in, when the F-111Cs finally did arrive the Air board advised keeping them and in turn purchasing them from the US to continue it’s CAS role for the army, but the cabinet and treasury rejected the phantom from contouring service and all 24 were eventually returned to the US.

*i am well aware that this is NOT and F4C but I am way too fucking lazy to do anything about that
