R-27 Family of Missiles
The R-27 missile family is a critical component of the MiG-29’s armament suite, offering a range of options for engaging aerial targets. These missiles come in various versions, each optimized for different mission requirements:

R-27R/ER/T/ET/P/EP: The R-27R is the radar-guided variant, ideal for long-range interception of enemy aircraft. The ER version extends the missile’s range significantly, while the T/ET variants are infrared-guided, providing flexibility in engaging targets with different detection profiles. The P/EP versions are tailored for specific tactical requirements, providing enhanced versatility for diverse operational needs.
The R-27 family provides MiG-29 pilots with a reliable and powerful missile arsenal capable of engaging both high-performance fighters and bombers at extended ranges. These missiles allow the MiG-29 to effectively contest enemy airspace, maintaining air superiority across various mission profiles.

R-60/R-60M Air-to-Air Missiles
For short-range, high-maneuverability combat, the R-60 and R-60M infrared-guided missiles are highly effective. These missiles are designed for quick engagements at close distances and are extremely useful in dogfighting scenarios. Their exceptional lock-on capability and agile design make them perfect for engaging fast-moving fighter jets and attack aircraft.

The R-60 has been a mainstay of Soviet and post-Soviet air forces for decades, while the R-60M offers further improvements in guidance and performance. The MiG-29’s ability to carry up to six R-60s ensures it can overwhelm enemy fighters in close combat situations, establishing its dominance in aerial dogfights.

R-73 Air-to-Air Missiles
An even more advanced weapon in the MiG-29’s missile arsenal is the R-73, a short-range infrared-guided missile specifically designed for close-range aerial combat. The R-73 is equipped with a highly sensitive infrared seeker, making it highly effective in engagements where the enemy aircraft is flying at high angles or making evasive maneuvers.

In later variants of the MiG-29, the aircraft is capable of carrying up to six R-73s, and some versions even support more advanced iterations of the missile, including the R-73M, R-74, and R-74M. These upgrades provide improved guidance and performance, ensuring the MiG-29 remains a formidable opponent in any aerial combat scenario.

R-77 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missile
In more recent models of the MiG-29, the R-77 missile, sometimes referred to as the AA-12 Adder, provides long-range capabilities with advanced radar guidance systems. The R-77 allows the MiG-29 to engage enemy aircraft at greater distances, giving the fighter an edge over adversaries in both beyond-visual-range (BVR) combat and at shorter ranges. The MiG-29 can carry up to six R-77s, depending on the mission requirements.

The R-77 missile is highly versatile, with its active radar homing capability providing accurate targeting in complex combat environments. This missile is especially effective against modern enemy aircraft, providing MiG-29 pilots with a significant advantage in air-to-air engagements.

Precision Strike: Air-to-Ground Missile Systems
While the MiG-29 is primarily known for its air superiority capabilities, its armament also includes a variety of air-to-ground missiles for striking enemy infrastructure and military targets. These missiles enable the MiG-29 to conduct precise attacks on a wide range of ground targets, from command centers to military installations.

Kh-29T/TE Missiles
The Kh-29T/TE family of missiles is available on later variants of the MiG-29, including the MiG-29SMT, MiG-29M/M2, MiG-29K/KR, and MiG-35. These missiles are laser-guided and provide precision strike capabilities for targeting enemy surface targets, including radar installations, anti-aircraft systems, and ground structures.

The Kh-29T is designed for precision targeting using a TV camera, while the Kh-29TE has an infrared homing system. These missiles can strike targets with pinpoint accuracy, making them highly effective in precision bombing missions.

AGM-88 HARM (High-speed Anti-Radiation Missile)
In an upgrade by the Ukrainian Air Force during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the MiG-29 was integrated with the AGM-88 HARM missile, a high-speed anti-radiation missile. The HARM is designed to target and destroy radar systems, making it a critical tool for electronic warfare and anti-radiation operations. The integration of the AGM-88 HARM missile into the MiG-29 significantly expands its ability to neutralize enemy air defenses, providing a critical advantage in modern conflict scenarios.I
