Mikoyan (MiG) E-166
Essentially a huge honking jet engine with some tiny wings and a miniscule cockpit slapped onto it. Based on a historical aircraft built by MiG in the late 1950's, which in turn was based on the earlier MiG-21 fighter with which it shares the classic tailed delta planform and most of its flight systems.
As a matter of fact, I directly echoed what went down once upon a time by actually basing this model on a great MiG-21 already available here on this site as well, so there you go! It's approximately 3:4 scale, and I tried to look at various drawings, so the proportions should be somewhat realistic.
Anyway.
On the historical side of things... For a little while the E-166/152 prototypes were envisioned as high-performance interceptor jets and some of these were fitted with various weapons for tests, but in the end they were only really used to break various airspeed and time-to-altitude records. This hotrodded "racer"-MiG conducted multiple world record-breaking flights back in 1961 and 1962.
Approximate real-life performance data:
Top horizontal speed: 3050 km/h (1895 mph)
Service ceiling: 22 700 meters above sea level (74,475 ft) (could go waaaaay higher in "zoom" climbs though)
Real-life dimensions:
Length: 19.65 meters (64' 6")
Wingspan: 8.793 m (28' 10")
Wing area: 40 square meters (431 sqft)
And at last, what can you do with this in SimplePlanes? Well, not too much I'm afraid. It flies reasonably well and it is mighty fast, like being strapped onto a rocket, but it's not the most maneuverable thing around and it has no provisions for weapons. There are more useful planes out there, for sure.
