McDonnell Douglas XA-471
In 1963, a USAF engineer named Fritz Braun came up with the idea of a single passanger jet engine on an attack aircraft. He managed to get a contract in 1964 by McDonnell Douglas after sketching out a rough design and showing it. The first XA-471 was a prototype more commonly known as the YA-471. It used a scrapped DC-8 engine and was able to go faster than most fighters at the time. Disaster struck in 1964 when the second XA-471 had a bird strike shortly after take off. The Pilot, James Mosbey, and Co Pilot, Max Mayberry died after a collision with the ground at mach 0.7. The project was cancelled and the remaining YA-471 was scrapped but maybe you will be a better pilot than James and Max.
