Ares Light Bomber
The primary attack aircraft employed by the Olympian Army, it was a particularly effective aircraft. It was developed after the First Olympian War, when Olympian Army High Command realized the value of close air support; the Pilotmario Air Force used the Pummeler Fighter extensively in this role, to lethal effect on the Olympian Army installations. Realizing their Athena fighter was unsuitable for this role due to its lightweight construction, it was decided to develop a new aircraft, stipulated to have a recessed or internal bomb storage and a bombload of 4,500 pounds. The engineers at the Aircraft Development Center in Knossos developed the Ares Light Bomber as a result. It was a heavy, durable and powerful aircraft, with four 25mm Model 11 cannons, comparable to the Pilotmario 30mm Mk 8 gun.
During the Second and Third Olympian War, they saw extensive service as support aircraft for Olympian Army units. However, thier role was hampered by its vulnerability to Pilotmario Air Force fighters, which were able to maintian air superiority for most of the war. The Pummeler Attack Mk 3 was considered a considerable threat due to the superior performance, as the Pummeler airframe was originally designed for use on a fighter, as well as its powerful 30mm cannons. Still, the Ares was able to score three aerial victories. During the Battle for Olympus, an Ares encountered two low-flying Trojan transport helicopters of the Pilotmario Army, and shot down the helicopters before escaping when Pilotmario Air Force Pummeler Attack Mk 2 responded. During the Battle for Salamis Strait, a flight of 12 aircraft; 5 Pummeler Attack Mk 2, 5 Pummeler Mk 3, and 2 Pummeler Recce Mk 2; encountered an equal number of Ares Light Bombers. In the ensuring air battle, a single Pummeler Recce Mk 2 was lost to the Ares Light Bombers. However, 11 out of the 12 Ares light bombers were shot down.
When the Pilotmario Air Froce was unable to establish air superiority, these aircraft were able to operate with a degree of safety, and were highly effective.
