Some changes to this vehicle as follows:

  • Changed the left police siren lights (red) into blue
  • Changed the livery of WCPD (Writers Crusaders Police Department) into 1970s Royal Malaysian Police Livery (See reference)

Use by Royal Malaysian Police

In 1979, with young drivers in America are selecting DIA Thunderhawk, the Royal Malaysian Police (Malay: Polis Diraja Malaysia) began to replace it's 1970s vehicles used by the police - such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Alfa Romeo Alfetta, and Volvo 140, with the new vehicles such as the Volvo 340, Volvo 740, Isuzu Trooper, and Daihatsu Charmant. By 1980, the Royal Malaysian Police placed an order of 23 DIA Thunderhawk, which - all 23 of them were later delivered.

The vehicle has saw numerous actions, including chasing a Mat Rempit, that where Malaysian youths raced with a motorbike. Although PDRM placed national vehicles, including Proton Saga into the police service in 1985, the vehicle began to be replaced.

The vehicle remained in service until it was finally retired from the service in 2003. Due to it's popularity, some vehicles were preserved, or even restored to drivable condition, or remained in service in rural areas.
