This was Curtiss' protoype for the US Army's super fighter program, the XP-40R used the best traits of all of the P-40 models to create in essence a super P-40, though most of it was success lack of manuverability at higher altitudes was a huge fault in the design and by the time Curtiss was able fix it both the war and the super fighter program was over
