The FR-1 Fireball, developed by Ryan aeronautical, was the US's solution to getting jet powered aircraft on to aircraft carriers. The plane had a proppelor on the front to assist in takeoff because at the time, jet engines were unreliable and took a while to start up making it basically impossible to takeoff from a carrier.
