F-27E Air Superiority Fighter

DATE: September 17, 1983

As the F-69 Pouncer was being retired after 35 years of service, the US Air Force did not have a fighter aircraft capable of taking on enemy fighters. Even worse, The Soviet Union had recently released the Mig-29 Air Superiority Fighter, which could outmaneuver, outrun, and outgun the aircraft the USAF were currently fielding. So the USAF called Northrop Grumman to design an aircraft that could outmaneuver a Mig-29. After some struggling, and a dead test pilot, they were able to get an aircraft capable of outgunning, outmaneuvering, and outrunning, a Mig-29. The XF-27, a variable geometry wing aircraft, weighed a mere 17,803 Pounds, and had a top speed of 1552 miles per hour (Mach 2.02)
Armed with AIM-9L Sidewinder dogfighting missiles, and the long range AIM-54 Phoenix, as well as a AAGA-54RE autocannon, the aircraft was able to shred apart a Mig-29, and of course other Soviet aircraft.
The XF-27 was put into service on March 5th, 1984, with the designation F-27E. The aircraft was also used by the United States Navy, but later it turned out that the aircraft didn't perform very well on a carrier. The USAF was the only branch of the United States military that used the F-27E, and then in 1986, the first to use it in combat. The president of Somalia began attacking clan-based dissident groups opposed to his rule with his special forces. The group began getting more powerful for nearly a decade after the president’s abrupt switch from allegiance to the Soviet Union to the United States, after the disastrous Ogaden War. The Somalis had obsolete Soviet Era Mig-21 fighters, which stood no chance against the well trained American F-27 pilots. After 13 years of fighting, the rebels finally surrendered, and peace was restored.
Then, in 2004, after 21 years of service, the F-27E was retired, and was replaced by the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle.
