This aircraft is the first Chinese fighter designed and manufactured by China Aviation Industry Corporation Hongdu Aviation Industry Group (formerly Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Factory). The aircraft began development in 1958, made its first flight in June 1965, and passed preliminary design and finalization at the end of the same year. This machine has various modifications. The Qiang-5 series aircraft was mass-produced in 1968 and the last one was delivered on October 25, 2012

The Qiang-5, initially named the "Eagle 302" in its development, was developed by China based on the J-6/MiG-19 fighter jet, following the design style of Western attack aircraft. The aircraft changed the nose intake of Soviet jet aircraft to two side intake, and redesigned the fuselage structure to incorporate bulletproof armor, bulletproof glass, and bombing and shooting sights. It also adopted the J-6 engine and tail wing design. From an external perspective, the Qiang-5 is similar to combining the newly designed front fuselage with the J-6 engine and rear fuselage
