In 1961, the Soviet Union granted the manufacturing license for China's MiG-21F-13 aircraft and R-11F-300 engine, which included a complete set of production technical information, as well as aircraft and engine loose parts. In 1961, China conducted a systematic "technical exploration" of the MiG-21 and assigned this new fighter aircraft the code "Type 62". In 1964, the Third Ministry of Machinery Industry (Ministry of Aviation Industry) officially renamed the "Type 62" as J-7. The prototype of the J-7 began production in early 1964 and completed static testing in November 1965.
The J-7(Basic version) is based on the MiG-21F-13 prototype mapping imitation. The J-7(Basic version) has produced about a dozen aircraft. Based on the basic form of the J-7, it has derived numerous modifications, including Type I, II, III, A, B, E, M, MG, PG, P, MP, FS, MF, etc.
The J-7-E is equipped with newly designed double Delta wing to improve the mid and low altitude maneuverability, with two hangers under each wing. Increase the stable rotational speed. Replace with turbojet 13F engine, Head-up display, new avionics system and new chaff/flame bomb dispenser. The J-7E made its first flight on May 18, 1990, was designed and finalized in May 1993, and was delivered to the military in August of the same year. By the end of production in 2001, more than 260 aircraft had been produced to replace retired J-6 series and J-7 I aircraft.
