ACAS Project (Advanced Close Air Support) WIP!

3,577 Krikkit42  3.2 years ago

This is an early build of a fictional near-future dedicated CAS airframe, obviously inspired by the beloved A-10. Though it may seem somewhat fleshed out in parts, there are quite a few things I would like to add or fix in the future, including:

  • balancing the flight model for stability
  • better wing construction (still kinda new to that)
  • simulating rudder effects (thinking of using the decelerons)
  • adding more details such as gear doors for the main gear
  • make cockpit more functional (anyone got a good working HUD I could use?)
  • better color scheme and livery
  • more advanced weapons (small diameter bombs, enclosed weapons pods etc)
  • make refueling receptacle work properly

So please treat this as a work in progress.

Current loadout:

  • MQ4040 High Energy Laser (yeah!)
  • Oerlikon 35/100 35mm cannon
  • 2x AIM-9X Sidewinder
  • 3x AGM-65 Maverick
  • 3x Mk 81 General purpose bombs (dumb)
  • 2x GBU-12 Paveway bombs (smart)
  • 19x 70mm FFAR (unguided rockets)

Controls/AGs:

For take-Off:
- Throttle up to 100% (there’s no AB on this one)
- deploy full flaps
- set trim up 50%
- rotate at ~205 kts (I know, that’s a lot, but it’s LOADED!)

For landing:
- crash a lot
- figure it out eventually ;-)

AG 1: Open canopy
AG 2: formation lights
AG 4: drop Mk.81s in volley mode
AG 6: jettison other ordnance
Brakes: deploy decelerons (air brakes)

I originally started building this as a submission for the Heavy Attack Aircraft challenge and obviously missed the deadline by a couple of months. I then decided to adapt it to the SP 1.11 beta, so there’s that. ;-)

Looking forward to your feedback!

@Krikkit42 perfect! I know exactly what it's like. I noticed that it wobbles a little, but you must have already resolved it. Anyway, I look forward to it!

@Lerkov1991 Thank you! Sort of. It's still a work in progress, but lately, I rarely find time to work on SP stuff. But I'm glad you're still interested. I might upload the project's current iteration soon.

I liked the prototype. Do you still work on it?

@WolfHunter9111 Got it. That’s why I thought it was clever. ;-)

@Krikkit42 Fairchild Design Bureau A-25C Hogfoot was actually like a mixture of Fairchild republic A-10C Warthog and Sukhoi Design Bureau Su-25 Frogfoot, just like this plane

Mistake, it should be 25, not 24. Don't worry it's all fixed now

@WolfHunter9111 I dig it. Whenever I get around to polishing this one up, I was gonna call it the „Boeing A-21 Invader II“ (as an Hommage to the WWII-era Douglas A-20 Invader), but your idea is actually quite cool!

@JettStorm Could be. ;-) In fact, I had something like that in mind when I made this. Wasn’t really into the ARMA III version, either. It was too similar to the original with the redesigned parts looking sorta gaudy and cliché, imho.

Hey, thanks for the upvote, by the way!

This is what the A-10 is gonna look like in ArmA 4 :p

@Tang0five Thanks so much - and for the spotlight as well! Well I do have a deep love for aviation and I used to draw lots of airplanes, so I know many common shapes and designs pretty much by heart. But most of my builds, previous to this one, just didn’t feel worthy of being released. However, I’m beginning to get over my precious little self and plan on releasing more stuff as it is. :-)

@MRpingouin Thanks, man! Although I’d probably say: what this deserves more of is work 😉 But really glad you like it already!

@Amazingaviator12 Thanks a bunch! It’s very cool to see you guys enjoying this build. I took a lot of inspiration from my understanding of military aviation and tried to make it as believable as possible … well, aside from the completely over-powered laser. 😉

It’s a really cool project that I hope ends up well. I can see this as something the military could use as an attack plane.@Krikkit42

@SpaceXplorer Well, that’s actually easier than ever since the new cockpit parts were introduced in the 1.11 beta. I just picked a cockpit frame, canopy, a seat and some instruments, controls and stuff from the ‚cockpit interior‘ tab and slapped em together. The HUD is my own (very rudimentary) design.
