Designed for cheap construction to civilian standards by colonial shipyards, the Type 34 Colonial Gunboats were meant to serve as coastal patrol and peacekeeping vessels, with a small crew and low maintenance. Named after towns and small cities in the colonies they were constructed in, most were unable to conduct effective open sea operations, and would be confined to pirate-hunting operations and counter-insurgency roles throughout the majority of their service lives.

It is generally a bad idea to take coastal gunboats into the open sea.

Designed by the Erandian Greater Southern Shipyard in response to the Republican Rearmament Committee's "1932 Colonial Protection Vessel" requirements, the base-pattern gunboats had a maximum speed of a leisurely 21 knots, and an armament of 4 5in cannons as their main armament, as well as a twin 90mm Multipurporse gun and 2 single heavy machine guns for anti-aircraft operation. Much of the design would be modified and changed based on local conditions and available materiel.

Despite the relatively light construction of such warships, many of the 38-strong class served admirably through the great war and the following conflicts, with many of these warships transferred to newly independent navies following their colonies' independence.

Gunboat Sumilang and Battleship Achilles

GC-114 Sumilang is such a vessel, serving an admirable 52 years before her retirement in 1988 before being repatriated to Erandia, where she was repainted to her original Erandian navy colors, lifted onto land and now serves as a dry museum ship.
