Today, we celebrate the independence of the most important country in the world

19.7k WaffleCakes  4.5 years ago

July 4th is one of the most important days of the year, and it's thanks to the Philippines!
74 years ago, the Republic gained its independence from the United States of America due to the Treaty of Manila after centuries of being a colony under Spain and the United States. Known as Republic Day today, it is one of two days to reflect on the establishment of the country we know of today (the other day being June 12th)

The Philippines is also one of the most notable countries in ASEAN and one of the most populated countries in the world. Even with all of the shenanigans going on with the Philippines today, it is still important that we celebrate its culture, learn its history, and cheer for its progress.

To show your patriotism to the great country of the Philippines, add a hashe (#) at the beginning of the row of your patriotic call, like this:

MAKA-DIYOS, MAKA-TAO, MAKAKALIKASAN AT MAKABANSA!

I like how salty Kanos become when it comes to this lol , i still remember em yanks firing first in 1899 and burning ,raping , killing locals through the years before ww2 came , in that time the PH became so obedient to the kanos that they'll die for the cost of uncle sams behalf , those whom joined the Japanese where hoping that the independence will be secured through them by completely kicking out the culture of the west , sadly all of the collaborators where labelled traitors while the kanos heroes not acknowledging the fact that they did horrible thing just before ww2 arrived , kasi pera pera hahaha

I don't get it how the Philippines would be considered by some people as one of the most important countries. I get it how in WW2 that Japan went on desperately defensive on those islands when they're losing but in other times, this might confuse me for some reason but this post has spawned in some controversy in the comment section, especially when it comes to the date that coincides with the American 4th of July and the title.

I won't talk much about that topic but never forget that a portion of Philippine pre-colonial history is already lost, The nation itself used to be the 2nd richest Asian country before WW2, and in recent times, the fact that the Philippine Armed Forces, despite sending out good units to places during the cold war, has come to a point where it is not sufficient enough to defend when it comes in a possible war against a certain superpower on a high-intensity setting and the Philippines can hold a status as having one of the weakest armies in Asia according to some sources, and the country itself still has to acknowledge that they need to prioritise improvement on poorer regions.

I'm done explaining with confusion in my mind as I went throughout all this mess as well as what I have remembered. Wikipedia has brought in some unreliable sources in some articles and it's sometimes a problem.

Edit: I would continue but I did get off-topic with what I had said, but drama within the comments section is what led me to bring up with this.

@asteroidbook345 You’re right, diplomacy exists, but if you’re already in a war, the other side trying to end it is completely justified, though they could have used less force.

Let it be known I would not bother to involve myself here if not for a pinned comment from the author that has since been removed.

@asteroidbook345 I’m not defending the excessive force implemented by the US. I disagree that it was a backstab, as you put it. Fighting broke out at the discretion of Emilio Aguinaldo. Not that of the US. The annexation of the Philippines was a necessary assertion to the rest of the world that the Philippines would not be taken by another power or Spain all over again. Had Aguinaldo not sought to continue the war he had already lost to Spain, once the US defeated Spain for him, the Philippines would have likely gained its independence much sooner and without such needless loss of life on both sides.

Hypocritical is a bit reductive. There are many circumstantial differences between these revolutions.

@asteroidbook345 Treaty is treaty. You get in a war you caused, you have to do something . Disproportionate or not.

@asteroidbook345 The conflict you speak of was brought on by Filipino nationalists. It violated a peace treaty and was not supported by the entirety of their nation. Spanish rule over the Philippines, Cuba, Guam and Puerto Rico was brutal and many sought annexation by the United States. Spain would likely not have granted eventual independence and neither would have, say, Germany or japan. Had any of these powers been allowed control of these regions, they would have posed a much greater threat to the US due to their geographic proximity. The Philippines was presently incapable of self-rule and incapable of fending off foreign threats to both themselves and the United States.

My countrymen fought and died for America’s independence over eight long years against the most powerful empire on the planet. Yours was granted to you. And only after, once again, Americans gave their lives. This time to secure YOUR independence from the occupation of Japan in WWII. Returning your government from exile. Your Independence Day coincides with ours to celebrate the friendship between our countries.
