PSA: REMEMBER TO SAVE

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Remember To Save Regularly

Create a new save file every 30 minutes. Don't just overwrite the same name, make a new save with a new name every half hour. Sometimes the game crashes, sometimes you make a huge mistake and don't notice it, sometimes you just need to go back to an earlier version of your project. Following this simple advice will save you a ton of frustration.

I do not want to hear excuses. I do not want to read whiny responses about how inconvenient it is to carefully manage your save files. "bUt dEAThTRaP, it's jUsT a gAMe. Y sO sReOs?" Yes, I am aware this software and associated website are in fact a game, thank you for sharing your astute observation. The bottom line is that losing many hours of work to a computer problem is much more inconvenient the spitting out a few extra save files.

Here's how I do things

(I'm sure some of you have even better methods)

Step One
My first save is titled A1

This way it will be at least close to the top of my list of saved planes. Nobody likes scrolling through tons of stuff to get to what they're working on.

Step Two
My second save is titled A2
The idea here is not to overwrite the previous save, in case we need to go back to it.

Step Three
Third save is A3
Do you see a pattern here? I used to create a new number suffix all the way until my project was complete, but that was a mess. Instead I start over, when I get past A9 I overwrite A1 and then A2 and so forth.

Step 4
For my 10th save, I overwrite A1
From here I begin overwriting the list of files. This keeps the number of saves down to only 9 per project but still allows for a big safety net in case I need to go back to an earlier save.

Step 5
If I am working on more than one project, the second project begins with B1, the third project starts with C1 and so forth.

As I said before, I am utterly certain many of you have better methods for doing this. I would love it if you shared them below. I know most of you already save regularly but with the recent discounts, I assume there are many new faces that may need a helpful reminder. Thank you for reading this and good luck with your builds.

@F104Deathtrap Thanks for the tip bro, I'll remember it whenever I'm doing a major build. Im planning to do a small private jet and a fishing boat, both with full detail

@PhantomAviator Yes, this is why I do 10 saves per project. I often make mistakes without noticing for a long time, usually I can undo them without reloading but sometimes they're so big that I have to go back to before the mistake.

@tsampoy MAN, that thing should be removed. Nothing is as cursed as the undo button

I overwrite saves after major changes.
With my Type 5, I had 2 saves in total, just in case I hit undo and the game decided to become a cloning machine, which thankfully only happened once very early in design

I thought this was going to be about a story on how you accidentally pressed the Undo button

I upload my planes unlisted. It means I can access them on other devices, and I can still find them if my game completely bugs out or something.

    here's what i do:
    1. save
    2. check if i actually saved
    3. save again
    4. over write message is there
    5. "good, i saved it"
    6. wait, did i really save?
    7. save it again
    8. save it once again because paranoia
    9. umm wait did i save that build i did once?
    10. save the thing twice
    11. repeat until there's 10 billion overwrites

@QuitePossiblyMangled And thus, you will work harder.

    Lets say I do a C-5M. I would put "C5-1" C5-2, and so on

@PointlessWhyshouldi I can't think of anything funny with which to respond. However, that does sound like a good system.

    I just go V.1 - V.( ).

@F104Deathtrap it also helps if you shelve a build for a while, if you can remember what month you where building something you can find it again:) I can never remember the actual build name.

@RamboJutter I like that. You can keep track of how much time it takes to build something. Clever

Similar to what I do, I start with the date and then 1.0 followed by 1.1 etc. Saved my bacon a few times.
