Am I the only one who wished they grew up in the 50’s?

Nowadays, we are more connected than ever. I could send a message to my British friends with a click of a button. I have access to all of the world’s information in my pocket. Humanity has come so far.

Yet we are all so isolated. In the 1950’s, during an economical boom, life was good. You could get through six years of collage with a part time gas station job. You could bike over to the woods with your friends, and build a treehouse. Life was so simple. So perfect.

Now, I’m aware that in the 50’s we didn’t have the tech we do now. We weren’t as connected. But, I would give anything to live in that time period. I would sacrifice my modern technological appliances in order to live a simple life in the era where nuclear war was imminent, where Soviet-American tensions were at a high, and the space race was on.

I’m aware it’s 12:32 AM. But I don’t care, I can’t sleep. And I keep thinking about this. I need to know what all you fellow Gen-Z’s think about my thesis.

I don’t wanna be in the 50s, for me 2020 has been a good year. Not kidding. I hate seeing people in person, especially family. And with covid, that’s no longer a problem. I’ve always homeschooled, so school isn’t a problem either. Also camping, one of my least favorite things my family loves to do, is no more. All I do is sit around the house playing SP, Halo and WoTb. So yea, it’s been a good year. PLUS, we are getting a new president! Please don’t take insult from this comment, I am saying this is a good year FOR ME.

@Numbers My point here is that when people say they wish they lived in the past, what they are really saying is that they don't understand the past very well at all.

    i also agree
tho i'd love to travel back to around 70's to 80's times too
back when stuff was actually decent and so was the technology

    ah yes, the 50's.
back when you could actually call technology as, well, "technology" now, no matter how basic it was (for me, i classify 1950s to present as "modern era" so yes)

@Rodrigo110 Ultimately the same problems extend into today, yes. As a society we certainly have work to do.

Considering the current state of the world, I don’t care at this point. @Potato21

It was probably not as good as you think for many reasons

@Rodrigo110 The first half of the 20th century involved a level of violence and death never seen anywhere else in human experience. In the 1950's, Chairman Mao presided over the largest mass murder ever perpetrated. There were horrific wars in China, Korea and Vietnam. Trust me when I say that today less people starve, less people die needlessly of curable disease and the standard of living is up almost everywhere.

@F104Deathtrap No more rough than it is now considering almost half the worlds population is below the poverty line

Whenever people talk about "the good old days" I always respond with the question, "Good for who?" It's hard to look at your life and consider the fact that others don't have it so good, but chances are that is exactly the case. Unless you happen to wish yourself into a considerable amount of affluence, the 1950's would be a pretty rough time to be alive.

There was also the threat of all out nuclear warfare just about every day.

It's been like that for all of human history and in all likelihood it always will be @spefyjerbf

Unfortunately it was only simple for some of the population during the 50s.

Yeah but also Google Earth and Wikipedia didn't exist back then. If you were born in the 50s you wouldn't know nearly as much about the world and different cultures as you would now. And the education system now is insanely better than it was in the 50s, and so are parenting practices.
    .
Sure life was simpler back then, but also life is way more interesting right now. I'm pretty glad I've grown up in the 2000s and 2010s.
Personally I wish I was born and grew up maybe 5 or 10 years earlier because of world events, and the amount social media has influenced our lives, but now is still pretty good.
