Add Afterburner Part To Propulsion Options

30.3k ChiChiWerx  3.9 years ago

The stock afterburning engine, the Blasto BFE150, AB needs updating. The nozzle doesn’t function completely realistically; it closes with increasing power as it should, but it doesn’t open back up when the “afterburner” activates. Also, both power delivery and fuel consumption is linear...you get neither the benefits or penalties or an afterburner. Another problem is that only one engine has an AB, and though you can build an AB using a VTOL engine and a nozzle using a ton of parts, it takes many of parts and isn’t particularly simple to build.

I propose adding an afterburner which consists of an AB can/section and associated nozzle, which functions realistically. You would be able to attach the AB to the back of any engine and it would automatically boost the engine’s power an appropriate amount (30-40%), while increasing fuel consumption. The builder might even be able to use sliders to adjust power, which, in turn, would affect fuel consumption appropriately. The builder should also be able to size the AB, length and width, much like a resizeable fuselage piece. The AB would activate on/off at some predetermined power setting, say 95-99% RPM, perhaps that a feature being builder selectable.

There’s my simple proposal, comment as appropriate.

Oh yes please that would be so nice. Plus it would allow the use of VTOL engines/nozzles on things with afterburners. I don't know what that would be, but it would be nice to have the option.

    Great ideas,
SR2 of course is a priority but we could see this implemented somewhat easily, a similar engine system to SR2's jets would work well

That'd be cool to see. More customization on the engines, much like SR2.
