IKEA Challenge - Results

67.1k SnoWFLakE0s  3.3 years ago

Hello everyone, the IKEA challenge is over and the results are in! I spent a good 3 hours looking over all serious proper (non-late) entries to the challenge, grading them, and providing comments or feedback to each and every entry. Please enjoy!

Krmo's MARKUS:
  1. Accuracy: Visually pinpoint accurate, with blueprint accurate dimensions. 5/5.
  2. Detail: Not only is it filled with accurate details that bring the model to life, it's also filled with all sorts of movable parts and features that make the whole shebang impeccably hilarious. 5/5.
  3. Assembly: Mildly difficult assembly, but easily done and works perfectly on the first try. Well-organized connections appease my brain. 5/5.
  4. Manual: Not particularly IKEA-styled, but a detailed, easily followed manual assists assembly greatly. 3.5/5.
  5. The Swede approves. 1/1.

Total — 19.5/21

I love it. I find it hilarious how you can see the weird lighting effect of meshes even ingame. Great entry.

PointlessWhyShouldI's MALM:
  1. Accuracy: Very accurate model, although the scaling is off resulting in a bed about 5 x larger than IRL. 4.5/5.
  2. Detail: Stupidly detailed down to even the bolt and screws… Yes. Too realistic for comfort. I can feel the pain of an hour of grunting and moving pieces around while struggling to get my hand in tight spaces. Really, brings to life the spirit of this challenge. 5/5.
  3. Assembly: Probably the most difficult assembly process in any of the entries. But the assembly process itself it literally the same as IRL, so you get brownie points. 5/5.
  4. Manual: madlad built the entire thing same as the IRL pack so he just provided the actual manual... lazy but also not lazy. Good job, I guess. Lol. 4.5/5.
  5. The Swede also has approved. 1/1.

Total — 20/21

Painful to assemble but gives the full experience. An entry that brings out the intention of this challenge very well. Excellent!

Default4's KALLAX Shelf:
  1. Accuracy: Visually accurate, but not scaled correctly. Some discrepancies here and there, but alright overall. 3.5/5.
  2. Detail: Well, you might ask what literally a couple of panels could have… but there could've been some extra detail to show the nature of how this is assembled, like little gaps in the pieces. Alright, but could be better. 3/5.
  3. Assembly: No real assembly process included—did not deliver flatpack :(
    I could've used a box. Well, 2/5.
  4. Manual: no manual included that details the assembly process of the ingame furniture piece. 1/5.
  5. No Swede approval :(

Total — 9.5/21

A simple and neat model, but could be better. Thanks for your entry!

Grob0s0VBRa's TROTT
  1. Accuracy: Distinctively IKEA styled entry. You could place this in a showroom somewhere and I wouldn't notice. The fact that you scaled it to a believable size made it all the more hilarious when downloaded. How is it pulling up water though? I see no pipe… Still, 4.5/5.
  2. Detail: The threads, the spring, the well-made handle… Every nook and cranny of this little spray bottle looks very real and exists to serve a purpose. Brilliant attention to detail. If I could ask more of it it would be for the spray lever to actually depress. Awesome! 5/5.
  3. Assembly: No real difficult assembly needed in this case, and is quite easy. Thanks for the box! 5/5.
  4. Manual: Probably wouldn't even have a manual if IKEA sold these. The gif is enough for the job. A tag or label might've been nice though. 4.5/5.
  5. No Swede approval present unfortunately :P

Total — 19/20

A hilarious, excellently crafted, overall fantastic entry. Great job.

brians1209's BLÅSA
  1. Accuracy: Built in a style reminiscent of a certain IKEA product, not to mention offering different color schemes. Well made! I didn't know IKEA sold ceiling fans. 5/5.
  2. Detail: The plastic bags got me. Brilliant idea. Even includes a switch string and everything. 5/5.
  3. Assembly: Assembly isn't inherently difficult, but the orientation of components make it slightly complicated. 4/5.
  4. Manual: Manual provides info but is not detailed and is not styled in the IKEA form. 2.5/5.
  5. No Swede approval :(

Total — 16.5/21

Overall well made, believable ceiling fan package. The plastic bags are still ingrained into my mind. Good job!

BagelPlane's Låda
  1. Accuracy: It's… a box? Uhhhhhhhh… I guess it would be like a box? I haven't seen boxes like this around in the stores though… hmmm. 3/5.
  2. Details: Welp, not really… the box is, well, a box with reinforced sides. Did I mention there's something weird inside the box? 3/5.
  3. Assembly: Box is box. No assembly or flatpack, I guess. Welp. Box box box. That's probably grammatically correct. 2/5.
  4. Manual: No manual for the actual box, lol. 1/5.
  5. Sweed points were not provided

Total — 9/21

Since when did IKEA start selling boxed bombs??? Hello???

JuanNotAnAlt's Compact Drawer:
  1. Accuracy: Built in a style that indeed speaks IKEA. Good job with providing various colors! However, scaling seems a bit big to me. 4.5/5.
  2. Detail: Generally good attention paid to the detail of the build, the handles are very well made and the drawers working ingame makes it even better. However, finishing could have been done better by scaling the pistons to be invisible. 4/5.
  3. Assembly: No assembly process included in game nor a flatpack. Unfortunate! 1/5.
  4. Manual: Not really functional as there was no assembly process available, nor was it styled properly. 1/5.
  5. Swede points--not present :l

Total — 10.5/21

Overall well made and good ideas coming here but lacks refinement! Thanks for your entry.

Hayhayjam664's MALM:
  1. Accuracy: Visually accurate but not blueprint accurate, and scaling is slightly off making the set a bit too big. 4/5.
  2. Detail: Overall shapes and other design details present, and an attempt, although disfunct out of the box, was made to make it functional. 3.5/5.
  3. Assembly: Assembly was not possible due to lack of information, but the flatpack is provided, although without a box. 3/5.
  4. Manual: No custom manual provided; the actual manual only, lol. 2/5.
  5. 🇸🇪pts: 0

Total — 12.5/21

A good piece of eye candy, but low detail unfortunately. Thanks for entering!

asteroidbook345's Yttervåg
  1. Accuracy: Visually similar but not blueprint accurate. Scaling is acceptable. 4.5/5.
  2. Details: Minimal details, no proper bed frame stuff and bolts present :( 2/5.
  3. Assembly: No flatpack provided, 1/5.
  4. Manual: No manual provided, 1/5.
  5. ööööö approval: nyet

Total — 8.5/21

Thanks for entering lol, nice speedbuild

hpgbproductions's MAMMUT:
  1. Accuracy: Visually identical and impeccable scaling. The proper children's chair, with all the bells and whistles. 5/5.
  2. Details: Although the chair itself is bland by default and doesn't leave much room for details, much effort was given to make other elements of the entry highly realistic. Nice how you provided the real flatpack, even! 4.5/5.
  3. Assembly: The easiest assembly process in any entry that involves actual assembly. Part snapping is hard to work with and you made it work! 5/5.
  4. Manual: Not in the distinctive black outlines on white IKEA manual, but illustrated with pure iconography and good explanation of the assembly process. 4.5/5.

  5. console.log('swedeapproval')
    > null

Total — 19/21

Great entry! Probably the most attention paid to physical accuracy in this challenge. Cool entry!

RajkoGavrilovic's MELLTORP TABLE
  1. Accuracy: Legs are a bit too thick. The shape is there alright. Scaling is off and is about 2 x larger than IRL. 4/5.
  2. Details: Not much attention was paid to in this department. I would expect slight extrusions where pieces mesh together. Shape should be more accurate to begin with :P 3/5.
  3. Assembly: not particularly difficult, but not particularly straightforward either. 3/5.
  4. Manual: Well, it was funny to read. Good that it's mostly iconography, but lacks actual detail. 3/5.
  5. The resident of the funny Caramelldansen production country did not give brownie points.

Total — 13/21

Thanks for the entry! Nice table.

Reeeeeeeeeeee45's MICKE:
  1. Accuracy: The shape is accurate, and the scaling seems to be mentioned in the description, although the actual build isn't scaled accurately. Neat job on the shape though. 4.5/5.
  2. Details: Nice work making the drawer actually open, that's pretty neat. Although, you could mess with disabling collisions to actually make it close, lol. Nice that you paid attention to the little cable flap, although it isn't as detailed as it could be. Overall nice work. 4/5.
  3. Assembly: No flatpack provided, couldn't assemble. 1/5.
  4. Manual: No manual provided in the entry. 1/5.
  5. Funny Northern european points were not present.

Total — 10.5/21

Nice table! Good attempt but some XML work could be done to enhance the build. Thanks for entering!

TheIronGamer300's Table Lamp
  1. Accuracy: Believably IKEA styled but the scaling is way off. Massive lamp! 4.5/5.
  2. Details: Quite a few things done to give the entry some character. I like how you added a prop inside the fan to give it that look. Generally of acceptable quality, although nothing particularly stood out. 4/5.
  3. Assembly: flatpack provided, but assembly is difficult and not intuitive—trying to fit a turbofan in a lamp set was not the easiest job. 3/5.
  4. Manual: no proper manual provided :( 1/5
  5. No sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeb points present.

Total — 12.5/21

Thanks for entering! I think it's the only lamp in the challenge.

Winners:

First place: PointlessWhyShouldI's MALM

Overall excellent quality build and truly captured what I wanted to see with this challenge.

Second place: Krmo's MARKUS

Another fantastic entry full of features and is pretty darn fun to mess around with.

Third place (tied): hpgbproductions's MAMMUT & Grob0s0VBRa's TROTT

hpgb provided a literal laser replica chair that's fun to assemble, and Grob0s0VBRa provided a really freaking detailed spray bottle. Amazing entries, both of you.

Thank you all for participating in the challenge! I had fun watching entries come in and seeing all the cool stuff people ended up making. I suppose y'all are better at making furniture replicas than planes, smh...

Anyhow, that's enough from me for now. I'll be seeing you when I decide to upload something!
