How did the Blue Angels get their name?

If you’ve heard about the Blue Angels, you may have wondered who came up with that name. Often, it is named after the look of their planes, or an allusion to history, but the one who came up with the name had a different idea in mind. He thought of a play on words after seeing an ad for a nightclub.

The name was suggested by Maurice "Wick" Wickendoll, a founding member of the team. The idea comes from seeing an ad about the Blue Angels Nightclub, and then he had an idea. He thought something like “Navy blue, flying angels, that’s it! That should be our name!” And that is how the Blue Angels got their name. Maybe not the best way to get a naming idea, but maybe one of the strangest, when you think about a play on words for a team name!
