Using my work in your builds...

118k L1nus  13 days ago

If anyone wants to use my code or designs, please at the very least credit me. you don't even have to ask for permission either. all that i ask is just some credit is all, hell it doesn't have to be an auto credit either, just something in the description. thanks for reading my ted talk

@ThomasRoderick i think it's purely up to whether original creator to chooses to ask for credit, if asking for credited has not been invoked than ignore that rule till you have been asked to give credit, this applies for generally everything

@L1nus It's all greek to me.
@ThomasRoderick Yeah, is tricky. Would one need to cite the stock craft for borrowed components, for example? I'll admit I've pilfered G and AoA instrumentation from them, along with weapon stock displays.

@ThomasRoderick "if it's part of your course curriculum you probably don't need to cite it" i think for really simple function variables that works

Pretty much. It always boils down to the nuances over "how much is too much", especially in areas where there are only few ways to do certain things (basically any sort of engineering in general). Same thing goes for citations in academic writing: where does common knowledge stop and citeable sources start? Although at least we have the rule-of-thumb of "if it's part of your course curriculum you probably don't need to cite it", whereas in SP we don't really have formal xml/FT education.

@ThomasRoderick And thus enters the argument over the nature of intellectual theft!

@L1nus fair, i mean i havent really had the issue much myself so i cant comment too much, but i can imagine it sucks, it takes like 2 seconds to credit, although if someone is like completely new, i can understand the erroneous lack of credit, as a new player I used to steal XML stuff all the time because mobile couldn't make it, and i regrettably never credited

    i have methods of authenticating

How? Can I learn this forbidden art?

mods have agreed regardless of how small it is that you take, you have to credit

Wait, so.... I know it's only tangentially related, but if I saw a piece of code in a video two months back and forgot who posted the video, do I need to search for the video to see who originally posted it?
Also, if I learned an FT code from someone else's design, do I have to credit the original for all of my subsequent designs featuring the same code?
I know the importance of giving credit, but I'm really ignorant on the more nuanced aspects of it and have been rather reliant on scavenging and hybridizing codes (or even XML modifications) from others, so.... any pointers please? The "regardless how small" sounds rather arbitrary so I really need to know the proper etiquette for giving credit.

@AbbasIbnFirnas i have methods of authenticating, i don't report on a whim, i have to make 100% sure it can be traced directly back to my originating build before i even think about reporting

@L1nus ok if someone take a small part from your build
    1. You will never know
    2. If you find it how will you prove it that it's your??
He can say that he has made it himself, because just think about it, how hard it could be to build a small part from you builds or someone else builds.

If someone stolen a whole build of yours, it's your right to report him to a mod but if some one is using a tire of your build or a simple line of code, I think it's little awkward to ask for a credit.

@Axartar Like i don't understand why it's so hard to ask for credit these days, like people rather block you then credit you and only when mods step in do they actually do something about it
