DVD Series PT 2: Simpleplanes... on a CD?!?!

2,560 THEOKPILOT  4 days ago

Last time, I put Minecraft on a DVD and actually played it off of the disk and then explained how you could also easily put Simpleplanes on one as well. But what about on its older, 700 mb brother, THE CD!!! Well, already there is an issue. The CD only holds 700 mb, while you need 750 for Simpleplanes. It would seem we are out of luck. But wait, there actually is a CD that holds even more than 750 megabytes! It turns out they made 800 mb CDs, that can fit Simpleplanes. Now, is this practical? No. the game has barely enough space, and the speed limitations of optical media would make the game probably not play well. Also, the write once issue with the CD-R (which I think all 800mb CDs were) would make saving ad deleting a huge issue. There are CDs that can contain over a gigabyte, but they are double sided, so you would need a double-sided CD drive (if they exist) to actually play the game on the disk.

You could also probably fit an earlier version of simpleplanes on a normal CD

Just a random reminder that floppy disks have games. and their max possible capacity with them is 2MB.
    .
And if you don't know what floppy disk is, it's the typical save game icon you'll see.

@StockPlanesRemastered I really needed to be reminded of my age and mortality via how long ago was windows 7.

I think the last time i ran a game off a disk was Windows 7 and this was 15 years ago.

@THEOKPILOT this is also a big reason why you can't get old games to run on newer windows systems. they're simply not designed for a gme which is essentially running off of a thumb drive, which is what a disk is when you get down to it.

@StockPlanesRemastered To be honest, that is a much better use of 800 mb CDs.

I remember the 800 mb cd's were mainly used for installation. you didn't actually use them to play the game. Nascar 1999 and Nascar 3 by Papyrus are examples of this. Nascar 3 was a development of Nascar 1999 to move it to the 800 to allow for better and faster graphics as well as particle simulation. with Nascar 3 you installed the whole game into a folder. with Nascar 1999 you only installed the core data onto the boot drive and used the disk for the rest.
other games that are examples of 700 mb games are the freddy fish series, put-put series, and tonka games.

The way you're talking about CDs like they're some kind of ancient relic makes me a little sad
