It is an incredible movie. They are P-47s; the .50 cals were clearly visible on the wings. Might've just been used because they didn't have enough actual combat footage so they had to improvise. @ChiChiWerx
@AerodynamicallyConfused hmmm...interesting. I'll have to go back and look again. Much of the flying footage was taken during actual combat missions over Germany by the combat camera crews and the film also uses Luftwaffe footage. The B-17 crash landing was flown by Paul Mantz, a famous Hollywood stunt flyer...later died filming an attempted landing in the "Phoenix" in "Flight of the Phoenix". Could be FW-190s, which look a lot like P-47s...heck, could even be P-47s, as you say, not sure. Sure doesn't detract from the movie for me, at least not so much. The flying scenes are good enough that they are impactful, are interesting, drive the story forward. I was most drawn to the stresses of WWII bomber combat, command problems and team-building the movie spends most of its time on and are very true to life. But I will look out of P-47s the next time I watch the movie!
As great as Twelve O'Clock High is, I noticed a lot of mistakes. I mean, they have videos of P-47s firing to represent the B-17s being strafed by German aircraft. There were many mistakes as far as aircraft attacking the bombers. Still a good movie though.
Lots of modern films here, Top Gun a clear winner, so is Pearl Harbor (believe it or not). I personally recommend the older films: if anyone wants to see some great flying classics, watch: Twelve O'Clock High (USAAF B-17s vs. Luftwaffe in WWII. Also a great leadership portrayal. Sixty Seconds Over Tokyo, Lt Col Jimmy Doolittle leads 16 B-25 medium bombers off a US Navy carrier in the first post-Pearl Harbor raid on Japan. True story and the carrier launch scene still stands the hair up on the back of my neck. Strategic Air Command with Jimmy Stewart, story of a recalled pro baseball player to fly the B-36 and then transitions to the B-47, the world's first swept-wing jet bomber. Look them up, slower pace than today's movies, but should give a great feel of what flying was like years ago.
Love any flying movie I see (subtract snakes on a plane). Love hot shots, red tails, Memphis Belle, top gun, air force me, love them all. I even watched some classics from the 40s and 50 s I love.
