I'm newer to the game and have not found out how to follow other accounts...

When you go to the persons profile, there is a black stripe containing that users name and points on its left side. On the right side of that stripe is a blue "Follow" button.
Click on a players name, in the upper left hand corner you will see the word "Follow". Click on that and it will change to "Following".
