There is a tutorial on this in-game, although I understand if you ignored it so you could get straight to building planes. Everybody loves building their own and testing it out.

Normal Aircraft: Center of mass in front of Center of lift. Center of thrust can be where ever you want

VTOL Aircraft: Center of mass in front of center of lift while center of thrust must be aligned with center of mass

    COM in front of COL.
COT can be anywhere so long as it's not asymmetrical. (e.g., to the left or right)

COM (red) MUST be in front of CoL (blue) to have stability. CoT (yellow) doesn't really matter unless you're using VTOL, in which case the CoL should be dead center on the Com (red).

COT goes anywhere, COM goes in the middle, COL goes slightly behind the COM.

Run the ground School in game. It explains everything. Thank you Andrew Garrison.

Please read this. This tutorial is for KSP but almost all points talked about here is valid in Simpleplanes. Also play all tutorial missions.

CoM in front of CoL and CoT below CoM. As with most things keep the distances in moderation.

CoL needs to be behind the CoM by a significant amount (but not too much, or the aircraft will lean forwards), and the position of the CoT is quite irrelevant. It can be in the front or back (and it will have different flight characteristics based on where it is) or middle of the aircraft and it won’t stop the aircraft from being airworthy or anything. You may have to make slight adjustments to the positions of the CoM based on where the CoT is to make flight stable. A great example is this aircraft of mine. If flies perfectly stable in the air, so try to get the CoM and CoL looking something like that.

That's not lined up correctly. The CoM is too close to the CoL -- move it further forward. And the CoT needs to be slightly below the CoM, not high above it.

The lining up bit is your problem, the COM should be a bit ahead of the COL and the COT should be as close as possible to the COM, and for screenshots, go to this website and submit a photo, copy the direct link and write this in the forum edit page thing, ![](direct link URL.) then your done :D
