Look up images on the internet and find pictures that suit your need. For example if you want to know what engine looks like on a B-17, then look up images of the engine to find out the shape and the look of the engine. Helps out a lot. Plus if you look in my Bio I have a link to a blueprint site. Check it out.
Look at how other players detail their planes, as long as you don't copy its fine to use methods or techniques that other people use to detail. From looking at your planes I'd say make your planes semi-gloss, planes that use 'flat' paint look boring and usually they look like there's less effort put into them.
Putting lines on the wings helps. Rings in fuselage looks cool too. Check out my more recent builds, they feature them. They are simple but effective.

@ScreamingApe my stuff is not as detailed as some. If you want to get closer to my level of detail then go ahead and look around.
@KidKromosone i'm not currently working on anything but i asked this for future reference as i plan on making a quite detailed plane soon.

Tag me in, I can help ya.
Like, roundels? I use very thin fuselage blocks. Also, add a small fuselage block as an attachment point. Works for me.
