Soooo... I just got a hobby zone duet radio control aircraft. some advice to anyone going to fly RC:
-get the duet.-
it is great. however, I was at cayoucous beach with relatives, and i hear this:
Toddler walking about
Me: nah it's fine my plane is on a tall shelf charging, it's all good, I say
toddler walks up to shelf
Me: yep, can't get that.
toddler: plane! plane!
Me: yep.
Toddler: YEET (grabs plane)
Me: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
(horizontal stabilizer, made of foam, starts to crack)
Me: aaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (running)
Toddler: (has now effectively destroyed my plane)
so how is your weekend?
This is so sad can we hit toddlers

Since my Firebird Stratos is too big for my comfort to fly around my rural neighborhood surrounded by tall pine trees, I bought the Champ so I could fly it at my house/neighborhood since the Firebird Stratos requires a large field. I was actually considering the Duet since it was much cheaper, but I went for the Champ instead because it's got better parts support and it's easier to make repairs. You can't really replace the engines on the duet, so if one of them dies, your kind of screwed. I also got the Champ because it's yellow and easy to spot in the sky.
@ballisticbullets
Well that's good.
@JohnnyBoythePilot nope, it still, works with some extensive tape. getting a new one, keep old one, maybe race with my brother.
@JohnnyBoythePilot The problem is I glued the nose back on, so the thing could tear among a lot of break seams
@JohnnyBoythePilot ikr
@ForeverPie
If you have a hobby knife, you can make a pretty good incision to cut open the cowl and have access to the engine. The engine mounting on my champ got nudged out of place during a pretty bad impact (although still solidly in place) and I used a hobby knife to cut out the top cowl to inspect the engine. Then I simply put the top cut piece of the cowl and tape it back on. Although you have to be careful to make sure you don't damage or accidentally cut any critical components, electronics, or moving parts.
@Jetpackturtle
Wow, what freaking jerks.
I was flying my rc helicopter and I landed it about 20 feet away from me and these freaking kids on bikes grabbed it and rode off
I am so glad we have security guards in our apartment complex
I flew my HobbyZone Cub into a power line... Sparks flew. The vertical stabilizer came off clean. I glued the wing back in and started flying it again. Then eventually the engine went lose indide the plane and I can't open the nose since I don't wanna destroy the plane.
Thanks, it’s a great plane when you get to that level @JohnnyBoythePilot
@CRJ900Pilot
That's awesome dude, I love Maules.
How bad is the damage on your Duet? Is it beyond repair?
Oh yea, my Firebird Stratos has also been attacked by small birds because if looks like a freaking hawk or eagle when it flies...
Well, I have a Hobbyzone Champ and smacked the sucker into a light post which chopped the right wing clean off at the root. A little tape and she's flying again. The tail also got partially crushed one time but I patched it up with some tape and it flies just fine, although the tail leans off-center, making it less precise in turning.
A plane like the Duet or my Champ is light enough where you can use tape to fix it and the tape can hold together the aircraft in flight.
I agree, beginners should definitely get a light airplane that's light enough where damage is minimal in crashes and fixes are easy and inexpensive.
Or you could go my route where I did my first RC flying with the large & heavy Firebird Stratos where it's construction & durability makes it freaking indestructible. Seriously, I kamikazed that bad boy in the ground once and it's still flying (couldn't recover from a loop), just a few wrinkles from the impact in the fuselage and the nose is a bit off... but yep it still flies just fine.
But anyway, here’s my weekend:
Waaayyy too windy for planes, but alright for quads
All my quads are being refitted/built on the workbench
Plays liftoff and simpleplanes all weekend
Yeah, never buy EPO aircraft if you can help it. If it was EPP, everything would bounce back to shape and would be easily glued together with no issues afterwards. I know products made of EPO are described as tough by their manufacturers but they are blatantly lying. EPP planes like the Bonsai and Reaktor are far better value for money and can take hits you wouldn’t believe.
:(
This happened to me once with my drone, I was flying it at a field, and a kid grabs to the controller and runs with it, I chase him and my drone crashed on someone's roof. :|
Toddler see, toddler break.
Ouch, I have the Eflite Maule M-7
What do you mean tall shelf at beach.
@ThePilotDude yeah. well, the very day I got the plane: windy like crazy, had to wait till it was almost dark. now that my plane is broken, there is no wind AT ALL.
