The Enterprise had quite a track record even before the refit, and after five years of boldly going where no one has gone before, the systems on board were getting outdated. Starfleet decided to redesign and rebuild the ship from the ground up, replacing the outdated hardware along the way. Looking at the original and refit designs side by side, the new Enterprise was practically a brand new starship. It was decided to change the class designation to Enterprise Class, and the new ship would continue its original mission. To boldly go... where no one has gone before.
