RIM-166 (Triple Play)
Background
The RIM-166 is the successor to the RIM-161 Standard Missile 3. Named Triple Play, the interceptor, like its predecessor, uses sheer force, rather than an explosive warhead, to destroy its target. Using a “multiple kill vehicle” to strike threats with the force of a 9-ton truck traveling 900 mph. Similar to intercepting a bullet with another bullet. Unlike it's predecessor, the Triple play carries three such Multiple Kill Vehicles to destroy its target. Though each MKV is smaller than a single one, advancements in more compact guidance computers have allowed for them to achieve better accuracy than the SM-3. Along with heavier materials for construction and more efficient engines of the MKV allow for it to achieve a higher velocity and in turn, deliver a harder hit on the target. Designed initially to combat standard MIRVs, the system was proven capable enough to destroy Hypersonic Glide Vehicles with acceptable efficiency.
