Cavalier F-51D Mustang II
The Cavalier F-51D Mustang II is a postwar upgrade to the North American P-51D Mustang by Cavalier Aircraft Corporation. Changes include improvements to avionics, strengthened wings, and a taller vertical stabilizer. While originally designed as a civilian personal transport, armed versions were exported to various smaller air arms, notably Indonesia, Bolivia, and El Salvador. Two aircraft were employed by the United States Army as chase aircraft for testing helicopters. Many of these aircraft are being reimported and modified back to the original P-51D stanard as warbirds. This particular example is an aircraft operated by the fictional Paternian Air Force in the 1960's. The type served the Paternian Air Force until 1978, when it was replaced by the AT-5 Guardian Angel. During its service, it provided an unmistakable edge against SNAS air units, establishing total air supremacy over North America. When it was replaced by jet-powered F-80 Shooting Star, the type was reconfigured as an attack aircraft, officially serving in this role until 1978, with conversion complete by 1982.
