Brief Information

The Poyasakai MRF.27 (Karyan designation number MRF.176, after the year 1976) Kitsune (fox in Japanese, MAI designation: Akagi, namesake IJN Akagi) is a Karyan carrier-borne supersonic, twin-engine, twin-tail variable-sweep multi-role fighter aircraft developed as a replacement for Karya's older fighter inventory due to the modernization of assets after the Second Phase of the Late Crusades. Developed by the Poyasakai Design Bureau in conjunction with Cormack Aerospace (as its designer and assistant), she then passed evaluations by the MAI then entered in service firstly in the Karyan Union Navy's air division; mainly as their frontline interceptor fighter, and during the Third Phase of the Late Crusades she began to enter into Fabellan service as strike fighters (MRF.27G Pearl Akagi).

She is designed to land in carriers via the arresting hook, mainly to operate on big aircraft carriers alongside the MRF.35 Kaga. As a carrier-borne fighter, her main missions were to protect airspace from enemy intruders, thus having the capability to dogfight versus enemy fighters during the Late Crusades. The use of strike capability rose with the Royal Fabellan Navy, as their mainline maritime strike fighters against the opposing Satanist militia's conquered territories. Only one from the RFN was being used as Honor Squadron munition to ram successfully against a building occupied by the Satanist militias, causing it to collapse to ground zero, or rather annihilated by one fixed light cobalt nuke pod.

Currently, only the MRF.27E/F and G Pearl Akagi variants are in service. MRF.27C/D variants were being used by the Royal Lisean Air Force (which were leased from Karya) and were modernized with Lisean avionics, thus having the C/D variants were being retired from service to make way for the newer upgraded variants. One thing some will miss from the C/Ds is the J79's sound.

As mentioned above, that name was given to her, the "kitsune" would eventually refer to the Azur Lane Akagi (yes yes, if you suspect it), due to her agility and battle history. She was also called the Karyan Top Gun, due to her resemblance of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat, yet with an interesting blend of Fabellan design. Another pilot calls it the Flying Spade; as her wings were swept, it resembles a spade from the playing cards.

Development

During the Second Phase of the Late Crusades, more likely before the 1970s, Karya and the KSDF were facing problems with its fighter inventory, while other countries get to have new fighter jets that outlast their technologies. Their opponents would eventually outlast their expectations.

This led to the launching of the NKF-X (New Karyan Fighter Experimental) program in 1967, where the MAI has given two designations for its characteristics:

  • the Akagi, as the frontline air superiority interceptor

  • the Kaga, as the multi-purpose fighter-bomber

For now, we should focus on Akagi, as their main air superiority fighter.

Development of the MRF.27

Within its development proposals for the NKF-X Akagi, three were being passed to the MAI for review.

These were the three contestants for the NKF-X Akagi. One of them has their information:

  • the Matsuzaka Aerospace Ma-176, a carrier-worthy heavy interceptor-bomber

  • the PoiyaYudatsi J.44, oddly the under-mounted inlet with a bomb bay, mostly to fit in a strike fighter variant; also to feature variable-sweep wings

  • the Poyasakai/Cormack XF.176, a twin-engine variable-sweep fighter mostly to be fit as an interceptor

Unfortunately for the first two, they were canceled for not meeting its requirements or rather lack of funding; Poyasakai's XF.176 began development and flight testing. The MRF.35 too were in joint development, where one airframe was designed by Poyasakai itself.

Flight testing occurred in 1971, firstly to be powered by two General Electric J79s as their main engine choice. It experienced problems, but are not fatal. Changes and refits were being made before 1974, where the XF.176's flight tests that time did not experience major problems. Carrier landing trials were also made and were successful after tweaks.

In 1976, MAI evaluations were now approved for the XF.171, eventually to become the MRF.27 Akagi (or the MRF.176). She then entered service to the Karyan Union Navy as their main frontline interceptor fighter.

Characteristics

The Akagi has a wide range of features to use.

Variable Sweep Wing

It is adjustable on 50% to 100% VTOL slider (VTOL DOWN). Can be used on supersonic cruise speeds.

Variable Intake Ramp, a la F-15

On 80% throttle (which enables the BFE's on the turbofan engine TAS > 60), the intake ramp points downward to achieve supersonic speed.

Radome

Inside it houses the STR32Y182 pulse-doppler radar.

Tailerons, spoilerons, and flaps

Tailerons are used for roll, flaps, and spoilerons also (activate AG3 to disable them). Flaps wouldn't work, so I added control surfaces on the internal wing structure. It wouldn't be noticeable much though.

the MRF.27E

The post-Crusade upgraded variant over the C/D variants. These include support for strike capability, and the new Poyasakai Proteus afterburning turbofan engines that can also be seen in the Cormack MRF.70 Gascogne.

Here in this configuration, she is wearing the KUAF colors, and is using a long-range interception loadout (can be used in dogfights too.)

Armament

  • 6x SM-99D AAMs

  • 4x Ryzal-37A AAMs

  • 2x Ryzal-40B LRAAMs

  • dual-barrel 23mm TKsk-M23 autocannons

Controls

Standard SP controls. To land, activate AG4, and full flaps down, then perform a butter landing. Brakes for under-fuselage airbrakes and spoilers (if AG3 is not activated)

Activation Groups

  • AG1 for arresting hook

  • AG2 for weapons

  • AG3 for normal flight mode (disables spoilerons and flaps), VTOL DOWN for swing-wing, and VTOL UP for refueling probe

  • AG4 for gyro leveling

  • AG5 to jettison tanks

  • AG6 to open radome.

  • AG7 for parachute (optional).

  • AG8 for supercruise. (disables afterburners. They are on at default)

(afterburners are from MIKEESE)

Side Notes

This is the third and the last entry for HellWARRIOR's Cold War challenge, and another variable-sweep wing aircraft to be on this profile. I'll see you on the very next builds, so as always, stay safe and God Bless you all. Aim high, comrades! Nipah~
