Those pilots were good. Given the amount of internation sanctions on Iran at the time, it is a wonder as to how they were able to maintain them.

Nonetheless, in the Iran-Iraq War, the Iranian F-14 was probably the most powerful fighter aircraft on any side.

In fact, during Operation Desert Storm, US Navy F-14s didn't achieve many aerial victories because the Iraqis have developed a surefire technique on how to survive an encounter with an F-14 from the Iranians; ditch your bombs and missiles, turn around, and hit the afterburners.
