Bristol Bangalore 1935 Bomber Challenge
(Imagine instead of coming up with the nonsensical bomber/transport idea the men sitting in wing-backed chairs smoking pipes just went for another medium bomber that was capable of greater range than the Blenheim. Well, I give you the Bristol Bangalore.) In the uncertainty of the 30s Bristol was tasked by the air ministry to create another medium bomber / maritime reconnaissance aircraft capable of reaching targets deep in Europe / lengthy sorties over the sea. Constrained by engine numbers and minimal funding available, the decision was made to convert some Bombay’s currently in build into a more capable bomber. To avoid changing production tooling much of the Bombays structure was utilised. To minimise drag, retractable gear was installed and a new tail structure was designed. A strong dihedral was given to the horizontal stabiliser to avoid elevator flutter created by the wake of the engines and defensive armament was beefed up. The limited bomb bay was deemed an acceptable compromise for the numbers that could be issued to the Air Force and the overall ruggedness was praised by air crews. The Bangalore saw widespread service during the Second World War and was finally withdrawn from service training bomber pilots in 1949. 2+VTOL down for bomb doors
