The Soepidjat-Ratoereng SoR-15 "Harimaoe" is an Indonesian single-seat, fighter aircraft produced by Peroesahaan Pesawat Oedara Soepidjat-Ratoereng. The aircraft, entered service with the Angkatan Oedara Repoeblik Indonesia (now TNI AU), saw action against the Dutch during the Indonesian War of Independence. Equipped with the Soetingrat M-16A5E liquid-cooled, turbocharged V12 piston engine, the aircraft sometimes was known as Indonesian Bf 109 (Indonesian: Bf 109 Indonesia).

Development
On 1946, the Indonesian Air Force (Old Indonesian spelling: Angkatan Oedara Repoeblik Indonesia) needed a fighter aircraft that can counter Dutch military assets, such as the North American P-51D/K Mustang. In a response to Dutch military aggression, Peroesahaan Pesawat Oedara Soepidjat-Ratoereng started to build the new fighter aircraft.

After the fighter aircraft has been finished, the first prototype flew for the first time in Soerabaja (now Surabaya). Hence it's successful test, the aircraft was designated as Pesawat tempoer, Tipe 15 "Harimaoe".

After the aircraft has completed the test flights, the aircraft was officially entered service with the Angkatan Oedara Repoeblik Indonesia (now TNI AU).

Operational History
The first batches of SoR-15 was delivered to the Angkatan Oedara Repoeblik Indonesia (now TNI AU) to counter against Dutch aggressions.

On 1947, when the Dutch fighter aircraft attacked Jogjakarta (now Yogyakarta), the SoR-15 "Harimaoe" managed to shoot down the Dutch fighter aircrafts. The SoR-15 has saw action during the Indonesian War of Independence, until in 27th December, 1949 the Dutch hostilities ceased.

The aircraft had also saw action in 1950s and 1960s. One of the example in 1950s was the Permesta Rebellion, when three SoR-15 "Harimaoe" fighter aircrafts managed to shoot down AUREV B-26 bombers to protect the city of Ambon, Balikpapan, as well as Makassar from bombings. On 20th April, 1958, when the B-26 bombers attacked Palu, 4 SoR-15 "Harimaoe" fighter aircrafts engaged against AUREV B-26 bombers and managed to shoot it down, but 1 was lost to a B-26 tail turret fire.

Following the start of Operation Trikora in 19th December of 1961, one of the SoR-15 "Harimaoe" fighter aircrafts engaged against Dutch positions. 3 were lost to AA fire.

The aircraft remained in service until in 1981, the aircraft was finally retired from the service after 35 years, being replaced with fighter jets.

Today, the aircraft was still flown in private hands as warbirds. 23 were preserved in museum, while 7 were restored to flying condition as warbirds.

  • SoR-15B - Variant with hardpoints, capable of carrying rockets and bombs.

  • SoR-15C - C Variant, introduced in 1952. For this variant, the original Soetingrat M-16A5E was upgraded into Soetingrat M-16C5a/E, a redesigned wing design, and a bubble canopy design fitted for cockpit.

  • SoR-15D - Photo reconnaissance variant based on SoR-15C.

  • SoR-15E - The E variant was introduced in 1959 as an attack aircraft, based on SoR-15C. This variant has hardpoints under the wing, allowing it to carry rockets and bombs, as same as the SoR-15B.

  • SoR-15G - Last variant of SoR-15 "Harimaoe", introduced in 1965. This variant features a new engine (Soetingrat M-16D3u/A2, liquid cooled, turbocharged V12 engine) fitted, a new fuselage redesign, and a new cockpit redesign, while the original SoR-15C cockpit canopy was remained unchanged.

The production completed on 1972 after the aircraft reached 1,000 units that has been built.
