This (virtual) new type of "assault gun" is modified based on the 03 type 8x8 wheeled armored vehicle and will eventually replace the PTL-98 assault gun. The new assault gun has a turret equipped with a 105mm tank gun, which can provide direct firepower support for infantry.
Ten years ago, the People's Liberation Army began installing a 100mm anti tank gun on a 6x6 wheeled armored vehicle. This wheeled assault gun, known as PTL-98, weighs 19 tons and is equipped with a larger turret on the WMZ541 (ZSL91) infantry tank to accommodate 100mm anti tank guns. Due to the introduction of a more powerful 105mm wheeled assault gun to the Chinese Army three years ago, the PTL-98 has been largely used to support infantry operations. Grassroots commanders are pleased to have this equipment as it is a powerful support weapon for clearing bunkers, machine guns, and other obstacles. Before equipping the Chinese Army with 105mm wheeled assault guns, the PTL-98 was entrusted with this important task. The Chinese army has clearly realized that in supporting infantry operations, these self-propelled guns will ultimately be more useful than main battle tanks.

The Chinese Army has always been very satisfied with these wheeled armored vehicles and has invested a lot of effort in the development of new models.
The Type 05 basic wheeled armored vehicle weighs 21 tons, is 10.8 meters (42 feet) long, 3.6 meters (14.2 feet) wide, and 2.1 meters (6.5 feet) high. It has 3 crew members and can carry 7 infantry. This is an amphibious armored vehicle with a maximum water speed of 21 kilometers per hour and a maximum road speed of 255 kilometers per hour. The onboard fuel can support up to 800 kilometers on the road.
