History about this NKC-135 tailnumber 55-3132
In September 1971, US Army MEWTA needed a replacement of their C-130A as a flying EW laboratory. In January 1972, they choose the NKC-135 (55-53132) as the replacement and then modified it to provide the flying laboratory role. The main purpose was to provide ECM to support the test of various weapons. This heavily modified NKC-135A, renamed Big Crow, flew it's first flight test in April 1972.
Big Crow starts it's mission in 1977. It's first mission is to support Patriot missile program test. Then in 1983, Big Crow provide ECM for NATO's E-3A test and evaluation, SEEK IGLOO radar system, and Developmental test and evaluation of Navy's E-2C. In 1984, Big Crow supported the NAVSTAR program. Big Crow modified to gain air-to-air refuel capability. In 1985, Big Crow participated in AMALGAM BRAVE exercise. After testing new EW system for the Navy on the USS Virginia, Big Crow participated in AMALGAM CHIEF exercise. In 1987, Big Crow flew to test AMRAAM performance, then supported Navy's AEGIS combined ship system qualification in the Pacific. In 1988, Big Crow continued Patriot testing, participated in AMALGAM BRAVE exercise, the demonstration of the ARC (Automatic Radar Control) program, and Navy's AEGIS system testing by jammed it. In 1989, Big Crow participated in AMALGAM CHIEF exercise, tested the OTH-B Radar, and Army's tactical airborne countermeasure system. In 1990, Big Crow continued the test of Navy's AEGIS CG, Army's Patriot missile, E-3A ECM tests, OTH-B radar tests, JTIDS tests, and participating in the High Power Technology Risks Reduction Program. In 1991, Big Crow received new EW system, then supported the USS Arleigh Burke tests. In 1992, Big Crow continued Patriot missile tests, support another AMALGAM CHIEF exercise, and participating in Gulf War.
