Tank details

In response to repeated requests for active international cooperation from the United States in the 1991 Gulf War and the 2001 Iraq War, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) needed tanks that could be deployed overseas. However, the Type 90 tanks deployed in Hokkaido were not available in sufficient numbers to be sent overseas. Therefore, the JGSDF made further modifications to the Type 74 mod E tanks, which were available in some numbers, to enable them to be used in asymmetric warfare. This is the Type 74 mod H.
The initial plan was to equip the Type H with increased composite armour such as the Leopard C2A1MEXAS, as it was required to improve survivability over the Type E. However, due to budgetary problems, this was not developed and the ERA, which had already been tested, was fitted as an alternative. In addition, a passive night vision system with automatic target tracking, equivalent to that of the Type G, and a powerful infra-red illuminator were added. (The infrared illuminator was also being considered for use as a non-lethal weapon).
Some improvements have also been made to the undercarriage to cope with the increased weight of the above modifications.
