The UM-06 is a heavy Utility Walking System for outdoor intra-base transport operations. The high strength and power it has makes it easily capable of hauling large objects, and the high mass keeps it planted on the ground. Due to these properties, the UM-06 is also suitable for armored recovery operations.

The ASTIND. Codename for the UM-06 is Ursa, and alternatively Futurelander II in early publicity material in North America. However, it is RM-GR in the New People's Republic of China, except for UM-06AS units which are codenamed RM-ZCR.

INFORMATION (UM-06A):
Hull Length: 3.61 m
Max. Length: 7.40 m
Width: 5.00 m
Height: 6.28 m
Mass: 40 t

Units Built: 1,200
Unit Cost: $5M (UM-06), $20M (UM-06A)

DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

The UM-06 has a large cockpit for two crew members. This and blind-spot cameras gives the operators an exceptional view of the surroundings. This cockpit also allows operators to use the Walker in high altitudes and space without additional equipment, if the cockpit pressurization and life support system is installed.

Space maneuvering capabilities and additional ground mobility can be achieved by installing forward and upward thrusters. All arm and leg movement is powered by electrical or pneumatic means, and as such does not need oxygen to run.

The rear chassis extension provides a location to mount cables for pulling heavy objects, and a winch is often installed under that for safety applications, in addition to conventional utilities like repairs and transport.

The UM-06 has sizeable arms with Type-3 humanlike fingers for the increased efficiency of carrying objects, when compared to older claw and pincer designs like those used on the relatively primitive UM-01 Gorilla.

Optional shoulder hardpoints provide a location to mount additional support equipment, including but not limited to grapple launchers, mining lasers, environment scanners, and control thrusters. UM-06 units may carry weapons, but is not recommended for combat as the cockpit has little protection.

VARIANTS

The UM-06 is a fixed chassis with many add-on modules. Hence, there are hundreds of combinations of parts. Only changes to the chassis with permanent parts or large special components count as separate variants.

UM-06: The original for-public production unit for utility applications.

UM-06A: Designated space and high altitude version with rocket thruster suite and life support. Used on some space stations, non-Earth terrestrial stations, and space ships.

UM-06AS: Anti-separatist scout variant with added armor for Russia, China, and Mongolia. Same chassis and hull otherwise to the UM-06A. Standard configuration of a target detection radar and grappling hook launcher, although some are known to carry support weapons.

UM-06Aq: Experimental underwater variant of the UM-06A with water jets instead of rocket engines, and a modified hull and cockpit. Safe depth of about 250m.

UM-06M and UM-06X: Tests for the combat capability of a unit utilizing the same base chassis, and enhancing said variant respectively.

UM-06Y and UM-06Z: Tests for enhancing the utility and transport capabilities of the chassis.

PRODUCTION

Roughly 1000 UM-06 base, A-, and AS-variant chassis were produced in total. Original chassis used by the base and A-variant were produced in a large pre-release batch, and subsequently in a built-to-order scheme. UM-06 units were not sold in much of the Southern Hemisphere (although they could be imported through third parties), unlike the globally available predecessor, the UM-05. This was attributed to the higher operating cost of the UM-06.

Base UM-06 and -Aq units can be purchased by any organisation or individuals owning suitable property or land, but attachments may be restricted. UM-06A and -M units can only be purchased by organisations possessing valid permits and no criminal history. UM-06X, -Y, and -Z units are for ASTIND. self-use only.
