Helwan Ha-300 THE LAST MESSERSCHMITT
Clickbait note - Only Helwan Ha-300 on the website that I have found that looks like the aircraft, big W
The build - This is a complete rendition of my original Ha-300, now with fully functional and mostly accurate cockpit, airframe and details, and realistic performance.
One problem that I ran into was doing the cockpit, as there were only two pictures I could find and both were older and not as high quality as I would have wished. I could do most of it accurately, but the lack of images meant I had to do some thing myself, such as throttle, flaps, and trim. On top of this, I took out some features like the drogue chute handle since I wasn’t going to add it, and the functionality of the yellow lever for the canopy is none, since it would have taken forever to get the glass fitted to have the canopy open. Other than this, going through and remaking the wings was a breeze, since all I did was make it the same size and add control surfaces, meaning there was no change is size.
Quick History -
The Ha-300 was the last interceptor designed by the famous and talented Willy Messerschmitt, with designs such as the Bf-109, Me-262, and the Ha-200 trainer for Spain in the late 1950’s. Originally the Ha-300 was built as a light interceptor for Spain, with “Ha” standing for “Hispano Aviación”. Before a prototype could be built Spain cancelled the project from cost overruns, leading to it being funded by Helwan Egypt, now turning the “Ha” into “Helwan Aircraft”. With Helwan, three prototypes were built, with all surviving with one near Munich and the others at Helwans factory and the other in Cairo. The plane was to fill The same role as light interceptor, and was expected to reach Mach 2 at 12,000 in under three minutes. To achieve this task they planned to replace the British made Orpheus engine with a Brandner E-300 engine. This was put into the third and final prototype and was considered satisfactory, with it planned to enter service in late 1969 or early 1970. Unfortunately, the project was cancelled in May of 1969 just before going into production and service. There has never been a reason given, but many believe it was financial and political, since the Egyptians quickly adopted the Soviet MiG-21 afterwards. Alongside this, the German engineers working on the project returned to Germany after death threats from the Israeli Mossad.
So yeah, that wraps it up. A tiny aircraft, and the last plane by Messerschmitt. Upvote if you liked it I guess.
