Freive Seven (Flying Dolphins)
History
Freive Seven is one of eight covert operations aircraft operated by No.1 Special Attack Squadron. The aircraft contains various sensors and electronic warfare equipment in the rear fuselage and has a "snorkel" which permits the engine to run submerged for short periods.
.
Freive Seven has been modified by its pilot and ground crew with large off-road tyres for landing on even harsher ground than usual. It first saw action during the invasion of Snowstone. The aircraft was one of two that flew from SWS Dreadnought, gathering intelligence and then participating in a raid that captured the Snowstone vice-president. For this purpose the aircraft was fitted with "grab-bars" for special forces to clip themselves to. As it turned out Freive Three made the parachute drop, but Freive Seven remained in reserve and shot up an anti-aircraft gun that risked destroying Freive Three as it picked up the two special forces men and their captive.
.
For operations from the short flight deck of the SWS Dreadnought Freive Seven was fitted with JATO gear, enabling very short take-offs and a high rate of climb. The JATO packs could be jettisoned mid-flight to decrease drag.
.
The aircraft's second deployment was to Maywar, where it made pre-invasion electronic reconnaissance and prevented the movement of reinforcements by shooting up truck convoys travelling to the frontline. For this operation long-range drop tanks were fitted for transit to and from the island.
.
