Japan Airlines Co., Ltd, Nihon Koku Kabushiki-gaisha, JAL) is the flag carrier of Japan. JAL is headquartered in Shinagawa, Tokyo. Its main hubs are Tokyo's Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport, as well as Osaka's Kansai International Airport and Itami Airport. The JAL group of which it forms part include Japan Airlines as well as J-Air, Japan Air Commuter, Japan Transocean Air, and Ryukyu Air Commuter for domestic feeder services, and JAL Cargo for cargo and mail services.
JAL Group's operations include regular and irregular international and domestic passenger and cargo transportation to 220 destinations in 35 countries around the world, including code sharing. The group's fleet consists of 279 aircraft. In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2009, the airline transported more than 52 million passengers and more than 1.1 million tons of cargo and mail. Japan Airlines, J-Air, JAL Express and Japan Transocean Air are members of the alliance network Oneworld.

JAL was founded in 1951 as a state-owned enterprise and became a national airline Japan in 1953.[6] After more than three decades of service and expansion, the airline was fully privatized in 1987. In 2002, the airline merged with Japan Air System (JAS), Japan's third largest airline, and became the sixth largest airline in the world in terms of the number of passengers carried. Currently, Japan Airlines is the official sponsor of Shimizu S-Pulse and Consadole Sapporo.
