Background

The M97 Torus missile system is a Federation short-range surface-to-air missile system designed for engaging aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, precision guided munitions, unmanned aerial vehicles and short-range ballistic threats. Torus was the first air defence system in the world designed from the start for the purpose of shooting down precision guided weapons in day and night, in bad weather and jamming environments. A feature of the Torus is that it can detect and engage targets on the move within 5 seconds.

Batteries of four Torus vehicles are accompanied by a mobile Terrier command center, which provides automatic interaction with the MIM-226 Trial, Toad, Sheksna and Laika Squall systems. It allows for efficient allocation of tasks between the individual Torus crews and allows each TLAR to be linked into a wider air defense system, thereby increasing target detection range and reducing reaction time.

Ammunition of the Torus includes 8 Viper series missiles or 16 smaller Pyrol missiles with increased altitude and range. Torus missiles have a range of 18.5km and a maximum altitude of 12 km. The system is capable of short-stop firing, which takes 1–2 seconds for the system to go from motion to stationary and firing of the missile.

Versions of the vehicle have been made completely autonomous.
