PT-109 (ELCO Motor Torpedo Boat PT 103 Series)

45.5k Sgtk  6.9 years ago

The Wiki

The Elco boats were the largest PT boats operated by the U.S. Navy during World War II. PT-109 could accommodate a crew of three officers and 14 enlisted, with the typical crew size between 12 and 14. The principal offensive weapon was her torpedoes, and gave the tiny boats a punch at least theoretically effective even against armored ships. PT-109 was also armed with two depth charges, two twin .50 caliber machine gun turrets (one towards the bow and one towards the stern) and a single 20mm Oerlikon Anti-Aircraft mount on the stern. Lastly, the day before her final mission, PT-109's crew lashed a U.S. Army 37 mm antitank gun to the fore-deck, replacing a small, two-man life raft.

Short Story

For those of you that don't know, PT-109 was helmed by future US President John F. Kennedy. The boat served in the Pacific during WWII, and was used in several campaigns. The boat was sunk one fateful night after a collision with the Japanese destroyer Amagiri. The boat was split in two, and 2 sailors were killed but the rest of the crew including Kennedy survived and were able to make it to shore after some time afloat. They were eventually rescued after meeting some natives who were able to pass a message along to US Command via a note carved into a coconut. I highly suggest you read up on the story as it is a very good one.

As soon as I saw the name PT109 I knew it had to be John's boat. Outstanding replica.

The detail on this is amazing. Probably could've lightened the color of the green a bit as it's hard to see some detail.
