Dune 2-seater. Working Wings
REVOLUTIONARY ORNITHOPTER MECHANISM (i have spent many hours working on)
For to long, there has not been a real dune ornithopter. All the ones I have seen aren't actually ornithopters. Just flapping wings for show that don't actually do anything. However, there also aren't many ornithopters that can take off vertically, but this CAN. While yes, i did not make this model, nor did I come up with a 100% original mechanism, (special thanks to JessaLeih for the mechanism which i modified, and laSoul which i used the feselage.) However, it is not the airplane model which i am proud of. I have spent many MANY hours, trying to get the mass of the wings, the shape, and vibration damping JUST right, so that simpleplanes game engine doesn't plough it into the ground. any questions feel free to let me know.
How to fly
This has a very complex unorthodox flight model, but once up to speed, it flies like a plane with a tiny vertical stabilizer, but does have vertical stabilization.
To take off vertically, simply push the throttle to 100%, don't touch the VTOL. If it is not at 100% it will become unstable.
To land, put the VTOL slider a tad down, and throttle down, this will make sure that the net thrust of the wings points directly upwards and not to front or back, this is a bit tricky.
This is the first ornithopter (AS FAR AS I'M AWARE, I SEARCHED FAR AND WIDE TO FIND ONE TRUST ME) that is capable of pure hovering. To fly horizontally, you must throttle down.
The ornithopter will simply stop if you set the throttle all the way to 100%. If you wish to fly with a high throttle setting, push the VTOL Slider forward, so that you don't ascend or descend.
Also, I am ONLY taking credit for the wing mechanisms, that's it. The model belongs to la Seols (spellung)

@Irobert55 The idea, is to improve stability from vibrations, by making them fast enough, vibrations tend to lesson, idk what engineers from dune's reasons actually are, but if it works, it works.
is it weird when i say that the designs for ornithopters from the movie are great but that this one wouldnt work/fly like a rock in real life due to how the wings are installed? basicaly at this size having a slower flap and larger range for the up and down motion gives you better efficency. but boy does this looks good.
waiting for this to blowup
YES YES YES YES YES
@laSoul, I have made an update version, with improved yaw characteristics when rolling, how do I update the model? also I can add the propeller if you want. However I haven't been able to find any ornithopters that can fly Backwards aswell as hover, link me in if you found any.
@laSoul hi
@Welliedowner It turned out fantastic. Funny enough, the only thing that bummed me is that the suuuper small prop got removed from the landing gear. I mainly used that for the similar sound it did to the movie's.
Mad props on getting the weight and mass distribution down too. The pain was indeed worth it.
Although if I'm not mistaken, people have made ornithopters working before, not the movie type, but flappers and DaVinci styled crafts way way back
@laSoul
i did it, i made an updated post, as there were dangerous bugs in the build. Fixed now.
