Convair 580 FRONTIER AIRLINES (1950-1986)
Convair 580 was an evolution of the Convair 240 family of propliners entering production in the late 1940s heading into the early 50s. The plane was evolved from the 340 variant equipped with the original R2800 piston engine. The 580 retrofitted the Allison Model 501 turboprop engines, the same of which being used on the C-130, for enhanced reliability and power. The conversion was done by Pacific Airmotive on behalf of the Allison Engine Company.
The Convair 240 family was envisioned as being a Douglas DC-3 replacement, a common practice for aviation industry at the time. The 240 introduced a pressurized cabin to set them apart from the DC-3 which allowed for higher altitude flights which in teen less to better flight performance and comfort. The family starting off with the 240 first took flight in 1947 and the plane would remain in production until 1954. In that period, over 1,000 have been produced across multiple variants, with each of them having their own distinct features. The model 580 has allowed the family to see service well into the 21st century.
