1957 Ferrari 801-Luigi Musso/French Grand Prix
In memory of Luigi Musso
Drowning in debt, and despised by his teammates, Musso was fatally injured during the 1958 French Grand Prix at Reims when his Ferrari hurtled off the course on the 10th lap of the 50 lap race.
This is his car in the 1957 French Grand Prix, held in Rouen Les-Essards, July 7th 1957, before his death in the 1958 one.
Wiki:
The 1956 season ended with Juan Manuel Fangio winning the world title in the Ferrari-Lancia D50 . For the 1957 season, the car was the subject of numerous modifications, so much so that Ferrari decided to change its name to 801, where the "8" indicates the number of cylinders and the "1" stands for Formula 1 , with the " 0" entered to obtain the classic three-digit number.
The most striking modification was the elimination of the two characteristic side tanks in favor of the adoption of two side tanks of reduced capacity plus one placed behind the pilot. This intervention improved the weight distribution, but during the race the car was more affected by the emptying of the tanks. Then it was the turn of the engine which saw the bore increased (80 mm) and the stroke decreased (62 mm) for a total displacement of 2,498 cm³ and a power of 275 HP at 8,200 rpm. The gearbox was always in block with the 5- speed differential plus reverse . The chassis was slightly modified at the front with the elimination of the front tubular structure introduced at the beginning of 1956 and the adoption of the Supersqualo front suspension.
For 1958 it was replaced by the 246 F1.
